The Emerson Waldorf School provides a creative, supportive learning environment based on the philosophical and pedagogical indications of Dr. Rudolf Steiner. We offer a time-tested curriculum designed to bring interdisciplinary and multi-sensory learning in response to the needs of the child at each stage of development, with a rich blend of academics and arts.Since the Emerson Waldorf School opened its doors in 1984, our enrollment has continued to grow. We enroll children ages 1-18, in our Parent-Child program for toddlers, our pre-K and Kindergarten program, and Grades 1-12. The woodland campus of 54 acres provides safe and ample space for creative play and for exploring the natural sciences, while specially designed buildings encourage a sense of beauty in harmony with the natural surroundings. A strong and vibrant community of parents and teachers supports the work of the school, including an active Parent Organization and the school store, the Woodland Shop. The school is a full member of the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA).
The advantages of a small school
Personal Relationships: Perhaps the most important characteristic of a small school is the personal relationships established between teachers and students. The teachers get to know their student well, to understand their backgrounds and their interests, and have lots of opportunities to spend time with them. Through engaging in thoughtful and deeply felt discussions with their teachers and peers, the students are offered guidance and inspiration in pursuit of their emerging ideals. In such an environment it is impossible for a student to fall through the cracks—each student can receive the personal attention he or she needs.Personal relationships among the students are also important. A small group of students means that strong relationships are formed, and class has a strong identity as a group. Important learning comes through the daily give and take of sustaining a community.
Improved Student Performance: Research shows that small class size improves student performance. Teachers are able to tailor the material to the learning styles and needs of the students, and are able to use alternative assessments that truly evaluate their work and abilities.
Teaching Methods: We place a great emphasis on experiential learning, and the small size of our classes allows us to do this. Teachers are able to integrate experiential learning into virtually every discipline, enlivening the learning process and providing students with skills and knowledge relevant to the world outside school.
