Wednesday March 10, 7pm: Making Changes: The Path through Adolescence, a talk by Peter Snow, author and Master Teacher, Edinburgh Waldorf School
In adolescence, the child is on a search for truth, and begins to experience the power of his or her own thinking. The adolescent psyche needs protection, and many youngsters, from puberty onwards, erect barriers for self-protection.. Girls may become coquettish, daring and defiant. Boys’ defenses may take the form of sullen or introverted behavior, apparent unwillingness to communicate, or a withdrawal into a “cocoon.” The adolescent behind the barrier is constantly seeking a role model with qualities to emulate. This is a time when it is important for the teenager’s parents and teachers to help them preserve a healthy, valuable idealism and a vulnerable sensitivity–about both one’s own inner experiences and the unfolding, insecure sense of self. Peter Snow, an expert on adolescent education, will discuss the changes parents can expect as they guide their children through adolescence, and the ways that we can help them along this path. Free event, at the Brown Room, EWS High School.

Simplicity Parenting provides an accessible, do-able set of simple changes in a family’s way of life that can bring relief to stressed children and parents. These changes occur through…
• Simplifying Environments: Reducing the amount of toys, books and clothes.
• Rhythm: Bringing more rhythm and predictability into a family’s day, week, and year.
• Balance: In a child’s life between down time, creative time and busy time and schedules.
• Decision Making: Guiding parents into examining the trend to allow children to make too many
decisions, too young.
• Filtering-out: making sure our children are exposed to what is true, kind and necessary for their
developmental stage. Bringing consciousness to a child’s exposure to adult conversation.
• Media Influence: Finding ways to significantly reduce screen time.
When parents are supported in integrating Simplicity Parenting practices and strategies into their family livesthere are such positive outcomes.
• Calm: Children more ready and able to learn.
• Resiliency: Children can be far less reactive and provocative.
• Priorities: Parents have a new sense of priorities.
• Teachability: The child can now more readily absorb the richness of the curriculum.
• Support: Parents have a stronger feeling of community.
• Parent Enrichment: The role of the early childhood and class teachers in educating parents in best
practices is supported and simplified.
This group is facilitated by Raelee Peirce, Certified PCI Parent Coach. Raelee is a parent of a nursery student and 1st grader at EWS and is currently being mentored and trained by the Center of Social Sustainability to become a Certified Simplicity Parenting Life Coach with Kim John Payne.
