English Comedy and Tragedy

Comedy and Tragedy syllabus

Comedy and Tragedy is a block designed to look at the elements in theatre and literature that can be found in these two art forms. Continuing with the Ninth grade theme of defining the world, we will look carefully at the elements that define these literary pieces, as well as the different types of comic and tragic works offered in the world. We will be reading classic comedy and tragedy texts and writing and performing in our own tragic and comic offerings.

This course offers a chance for a student to work creatively and academically in the same class.

This year we would like to see Henry V at Playmakers and then read the play as a sample of tragedy. We will also be reading A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare as our sample of comedy. Each student will also be expected to write a tragic and comic skit and they
will be acting in either our sample plays by William Shakespeare or in their own written pieces.

The student’s notes, summations of our reading assignments, student’s skits and reflections will all be expected in the final main lesson book.
