Parents play an important role in the education their children receive at Emerson Waldorf School. Close collaboration between parents and teachers is essential, and children always benefit when this collaboration is mutually supportive.
Parents are involved at many levels. First and foremost, they provide a home environment which supports the daily work of the teachers in the classroom. Waldorf schools recognize the importance of the home situation in the child’s development, and teachers are happy to discuss ways in which parents can support their work at home.
Each class holds Parent evenings several times a year, at which the teacher discusses aspects of the curriculum and the social dynamics of the class. Concerns can also be raised and addressed. Individual parent-teacher conferences are held twice a year, at which parents have a chance to discuss their child’s progress and challenges. Teachers and the Faculty chairperson hold office hours, or will meet with parents at any time by appointment. Open and clear communication between parents and teachers, and parents and school administration, is an important part of life at Emerson Waldorf School.
In addition, parents have many opportunities to get involved with community life at Emerson. We have an active Parents Organization, festivals and events supported by parent volunteer efforts, and parent representatives to school committees and to the Board of Directors. From knitting toys for the Holiday Fair, to editing the school magazine, volunteer opportunities abound! Relationships forged through volunteer work for the school help to build and strength our community of parents as well as provide strong community support for our children as they grow.
