‘Main Lesson’ is the name given to the first period of every day in Waldorf Schools. The Main Lesson curriculum is studied in blocks, in a multi-disciplinary way, without textbooks. At the end of the block, each student creates his or her own ‘textbook’, in the form of a Main Lesson book, which includes essays, drawings, maps, poetry, descriptions of lab experiments–a unique interpretation by the student of the material which has been presented and discussed in class over the block period of 3-4 weeks. These Main Lesson books are graded by the teacher and returned to the student as a permanent, beautiful record of their learning.
