Special Subjects

Special Subjects, studied after the morning Main Lesson, include Handwork, Practical Arts, Physical Education, Fine Arts, Music, Foreign Languages, Language Arts, Math, American History (11th grade) and Current Events (10th Grade).

Handwork

All grades in the High School do Handwork as a special subject, including basketry, bookbinding, calligraphy, and other crafts, depending on interest and teacher availability.  As part of the Handwork curriculum, each year the Chapel Hill Weaver’s Guild comes to EWS High School and teaches 10th grade weaving and fiber arts. Here are some pictures:

Practical Arts

The High School Practical Arts curriculum includes coppersmithing, carpentry, joinery, and, when possible, blacksmithing.

Fine Arts

Every High School student takes a variety of Fine Arts blocks, including oil painting, charcoal drawing, black and white painting, water color painting and more–offerings change yearly.  Here are pictures of a recent student exhibit at a local coffee shop, and some of the other artwork students have produced:

Music Electives

Music electives vary from year to year and may include drumming, string band, song-writing, contra-dancing, chorus or other offerings according to the interests of students and faculty..  In addition, one of our extra-curricular afternoon clubs is the Jazz Club.  The High School is always full of music as students bring their instruments to school and play during their breaks.
