History Through Art

HISTORY through ART (9th Grade)

Instructor: Laura Guinan

Course Description: The study of Art in the 9th grade provides students with opportunities to
cultivate powers of observation while awakening enthusiasm for artistic experiences and refining
their understanding of the forces governing artistic activities. The philosophical question, “What is
Art?” begins a dialogue about human expression that involves issues of beauty, originality, intention,
skill and much more. Following this question through history allows each student to experience the
evolution of humanity’s relationship to both the material and spiritual world. This course aims to
give students the skills to become active viewers of art. Learning how to ask questions of art works is
critical to one’s ability to connect with something bigger than the self.

Course Format: This class consists of a variety of activities that allow the student to relate to the
course material including: discussion, lecture, outside activities, looking at art images, a field trip to an
art museum, writing and artistic exercises. Students are expected to come to class fully prepared and
ready to participate in the day’s activities.
