Summer Camps

EWS offers specialty camps for Children ages 4-14.  Join us for active, healthy summer days filled with music, drama, fort-building, woodwork, crafts, art, nature exploration, skateboarding, creativity, and imagination on our 54 acres of fields, forests, and farm.

2018  SUMMER CAMPS

 

WEEK 1  JUNE 18-22

CHILDHOOD MAGIC AGES 4-6

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Early Childhood teacher Robin Olson.

INDIAN ARTS  Ages 6-9

India is the land of spices and elephants, yoga, meditation, colorful clothing, music, dance, gods and goddesses, and a reverence for Mother Earth. Through jewelry making, block-printing with hand carved wooden stamps, stories, dance, yoga, and music campers will experience a bit of the beautiful culture of India with Priya Gopal, teacher, choreographer, and director of Prema Natya Dance School

FARM CAMP Ages 7-10

Join seasoned environmental educator and FarmSchool founder CC King to learn homesteading skills like bread-baking, candle-dipping, and soap-making. We'll be eating our bread with butter we've churned from the cream of a local cow. Perhaps you'd like to share some lemon curd you made from lemons you squeezed and added to eggs you collected from chickens that you know.

MAGICAL WORLD OF PLANTS  Ages 8-11

Spend a week with herbalist Rebecca Foster, diving into the magic of herbs! Learn how to identify, harvest and make medicine from plants that grow in your own backyard! In this camp we will learn how to make herbal salves, tinctures, poultices and delicious herbal treats. We will also sing, draw, and celebrate our green allies!

GAMES WITH GUMBY Ages 9-13 

This camp is all about outdoor games with the renowned games master, Gumby Montgomery! Games to get us exercising, feeling good, learning, and having fun outside. We'll play active games to keep everyone alert and attentive, circle games to get to know each other, and "Epic Games" that could take all day!  The 3 "rules" that apply to ALL games: 1. Play hard. 2. Play Fair. 3. Nobody hurt. LET'S PLAY!

 

WEEK 2  JUNE 25-29

CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Early Childhood teacher Robin Olson.

EARTH WISDOM  Ages 6-9

Join herbalist, earth-lover, and Waldorf teacher, Rebecca Foster, for a week of adventure! Experience the simplicity and richness of being in Nature. We'll explore the forests and meadows of the EWS campus, learn about wild plants and animals, make a basket,  build a wickiup, and experience the wisdom of this earth that sustains our life.

SKATE CAMP!  Ages 7-11 

Improve your moves, learn new rad tricks, skate local skate parks in Chapel Hill, Durham, and Graham. Learn how to maintain your skateboard and build a ramp. Be inspired by the group and get tips from skateboard veteran and EWS teacher Mr. Trueblood. Liability waiver and additional $25 transportation and park fee required upon enrollment.

SPIDER CRAFT Ages 8-12

We'll explore the art of weaving natural fibers into cool objects. We'll make baskets of various styles like Wickerwork and Coil. We will tie simple grass mats, make Cattail hats, twist cordage from plant fibers with COUNTLESS applications including Waraji, a Japanese style sandal that is fairly easy, uber cool, and SO FUN TO MAKE!

WOODWORK CAMP  Ages 10-13 

Spend the day with EWS Woodwork teacher Peter Moyers in his Wood Shop developing your skills as an apprentice woodworker. Our acres of woods will reveal that perfect branch for us to make our first works of art. Saws, axes, rasps, and files will be our tools of choice. Carefully creating a treasure box will be the highlight of the week! Additional $15 material fee.

JAZZ CAMP  Ages 12-18

(Two Week Camp)
Swing band, combo work, and jazz musicianship with independent musician and EWS instructor Erich Lieth. Prior musical experience is necessary, and admission is by audition (no prior jazz experience necessary). For more information, see www.summerjazz.org.

 

WEEK 3 JULY 2-6 

CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Rebecca Foster.

DRAGON TAILS Ages 6-9

Dive deep into a world of goofy, grumpy, flying, gold-hoarding, fire-breathing dragons! In this camp, we will listen to dragon tales from around the globe, become dragon characters on stage, create dragon masks from paper mache, go on scavenger hunts for treasure, and even befriend our inner dragons. Come laugh, move, create, explore and expand your imagination in this colorful camp with EWS After-school teacher Rosco Davis.

NATURE'S ART Ages 7-10

Be prepared to let mother nature WOW and inspire you as we explore her many gifts  and create our own works of art. We'll press flowers, paint rocks, create wind chimes, bird-feeders and more. Come play, create and become grounded through mother nature’s therapy with aspiring Waldorf Teacher Toni White. 

THEATER OF THE FOREST  Ages 9-13

We will create original stories, songs, and characters that tell the tales of the trees and wonder where the river runs.  Perfect for creative kids with an interest in theater and the great outdoors.  With instructor Creighton Irons, a NYC-based composer/lyricist and teaching artist born and raised on the New Hope River. 

SKATE CAMP 2  Ages 10-14

WEEK 4 JULY 9-13

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Rebecca Foster

MOVEMENT MAGIC Ages 6-9

Explore the world through dance, stories and imaginative play with dance teacher Kiera Manna. Create a rain forest dance where wind, birds and spirits soar. Or an ocean story to dance with whales and mermaids and other wild creatures of the sea. There are sure to be spiraling hoops, floating ribbons, streamers, or fairy ballerinas, and the festive clamor of tambourines!

WEST AFRICAN VILLAGE  Ages 7-10

Travel  with drummer and story-teller Braima Moiwai to his village in the rain forest of Sierra Leone, West Africa. There you will discover and create vibrant rhythms of the drums, fun and challenging games to keep you on your toes, stories you will never forget, and colorful crafts inspired by the jungle.

FORT BUILDING  Ages  8-11 

Ever build a fort in the woods? Well, here's your chance to explore and experiment with structures made of natural materials that we will find and gather. We'll learn how to choose a good campsite- guided by "the 5 W's"- since a good shelter in a bad location is a BAD SHELTER. We'll also learn the 4 principles necessary for any effective survival shelter. You will have a chance to work on individual forts and possibly a large group structure with seasoned counselor gumby Montgomery. We will also play games and take walks in the woods, fields, and wetlands to see what we can learn from other creatures’ nests, dens, and hideouts. Bring ideas and enthusiasm!

 

WEEK 5 JULY 16-20

CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Early Childhood assistant Priya Gopal.

FAIRY GARDENS AND GNOME HOMES  Ages 6-9

What fun the fairies and gnomes will have with the homes, playgrounds, and gardens we make for them. Who knows, they may come out of hiding and join in our circle games and songs. Explore the fairy realm and create fun arts and crafts with EWS Early Childhood assistant Laura Abad.

FIESTA EN PUERTO RICO Ages 7-10

Experience the vibrant holidays and festivities celebrated in Puerto Rico! Campers will have a chance to learn traditional Puerto Rican games and songs, make traditional beverages, learn basic Plena steps and craft a Vejigante mask. Join the fun and festivities with Isabel Rios-Torres, Puerto Rican native and current Spanish Teacher at Durham Academy.

HONK!  Ages 11-15

Drums, band and string instruments, costumes, and lantern parades are all a part of the worldwide street band movement. Join EWS Music Director Jason Child for an introduction to this energetic, fun style of music.  We will use compose our own music, arrange it to suit our instrumentation, and then create fun ways to perform it. Honk! is suitable for instrumentalists who can read music and play at an intermediate or advanced level. Want to join but feel unsure? Just ask!

 

WEEK 6 JULY 23-27

CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Early Childhood assistant Priya Gopal.

FLOW  Ages 6-9

Dive into the elements as we explore flowing water and air with EWS teacher Jason Child. We’ll spend our days outdoors playing with water, boats, rockets, airplanes, pinwheels, streamers, hot air balloons, and more.  Bring your curiosity, ingenuity, and a bathing suit and towel because one of our projects is a homemade water slide!

FANTASTIC FIBER ARTS Ages 7-10

In this camp, we will use textiles and fibers to knit, knot, weave, and more! Along the way, we will upcycle scraps and incorporate unusual materials to explore color and texture in practical and artistic items. Join EWS Handwork Teacher Wendy Ziegler for a week of creative exploration with a variety of handwork crafts

WILD WOODS Ages 9-13

 Explore the Wild Woods through games, explorations and focused activities with naturalist Gumby Montgomery. Activities may include journaling, bark and leaf rubbings, whittling, fire-making, sap-collecting, shelter-making. The gifts that trees offer us are endless!

PAINT THE WORLD Ages 10-14

For anyone who loves to paint and draw, or wishes they knew how! Days will be spent exploring self-expression and technique through drawing, painting, sketching and journaling. All skill levels welcome. Lead by Ms. Shannon O’Connor, graduate of Parsons School of Design, class teacher at EWS, artist and musician.
