Summer Camps Overview

EWS offers specialty camps for Children ages 4-14.  Join us for active, healthy summer days filled with fine arts, fort-building, woodwork, crafts, skateboarding, nature exploration, and more on our 54 acres of fields, forests, and farm.

Summer Camps 2019

WEEK 1  JUNE 17-21

CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6



Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Early Childhood teacher Robin Olson.



FARM CAMP Ages 6-9

Join seasoned environmental educator and Farm School founder CC King to learn homesteading skills like bread-baking, candle-dipping, and soap-making. We'll be eating our bread with butter we've churned from the cream of a local cow. Perhaps you'd like to share some lemon curd you made from lemons you squeezed and added to eggs you collected from chickens that you know. Each day we will spend time at the EWS farm, in the garden and with the animals, as well as in the woods.  Throughout the week we will farm craft, play games and grow in friendship. 

‘ARABI ARTS Ages 8-12

Join teacher and storyteller Samia Touati, to explore art, culture and language from the Middle East and North Africa, with focus on Morocco. Samia is passionate about sharing her life experiences from her upbringing, interdisciplinary training and travels. Enjoy stories, songs, poems and arts from the ancient Arab world, including Arabic calligraphy, la cuisine Marocaine, cooked on clay pots, Moroccan tea ceremony, and henna. Experience the sounds and flavors and delights of the ancient cities of al-Maghrib!

WILD WOODS Ages 9-13

Explore the Wild Woods through games, explorations and focused activities with naturalist Gumby Montgomery. Activities may include journaling, bark and leaf rubbings, whittling, fire-making, shelter-making. The gifts that trees offer us are endless!

BASKETBALL! Ages 11-15

A week of basketball skills and drills, we will cover all of the fundamentals of basketball. All skill levels welcome. Throughout the week we will work on ball handling, shooting, passing, footwork, offense and defense. Join EWS Athletic Director and Coach Erica Knolhoff to learn and improve your game! Extra $25 transportation and gym fee due upon enrollment.


WEEK 2  JUNE 24-28

 CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

DRAGON TAILS Ages 6-9



Dive deep into a world of goofy, grumpy, flying, gold-hoarding, fire-breathing dragons! In this camp, we will listen to dragon tales from around the globe, become dragon characters on stage, create dragon masks from paper mache, go on scavenger hunts for treasure, and even befriend our inner dragons. Come laugh, move, create, explore and expand your imagination in this colorful camp with former EWS teacher Rosco Davis. 

UPCYCLE CREATIONS Ages 7-10

In Upcycle Creations we will find new ways of looking at the world around us. More than recycling, we will discover creative uses for things that otherwise get thrown away.  Discarded items we find in the woods, on the side of the road, and in our own home become valuable again in practical, fun, and unique ways. Together with educator Teresa Ferlotti,, we will create no-sew reusable bags, survival bracelets, "buddy burners", and more! After this week, you may never think of trash the same again!

EXCURSIONS, EXCURSIONS Ages 9-12

Who loves a daily adventure out in the world? Who loves to ride on the bus? Each day will be filled with a different outing and activity. We’ll go bowling, creek stomping, roller-skating, swimming and more! Look forward to something fun and new to do with EWS teacher Toni White. Permission slip required for off campus trips. $25 transportation and admission fee required upon enrollment.

JAZZ CAMP  Ages 12-18

(Two Week Camp)

Swing band, combo work, and jazz musicianship with independent musician and former EWS instructor Erich Lieth. Prior musical experience is necessary, and admission is by audition (no prior jazz experience necessary). For more information, see www.summerjazz.org.


WEEK 3 JULY 1-5

CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with Waldorf Early Childhood Teacher Lizzie Jacobs.

INDIAN ARTS  Ages 6-9


Join Kamalini Darling to experience the exotic culture of India through story-telling, puppet shows, yoga, crafts, sand art, meditation, music, mahendhi henna and colorful clothing. Through arts and crafts we will depict the decorated elephant and cow, the peacock, lotus flower and tiger! 

SCULPTURE CULTURE Ages 7-10

Let’s build! We’ll use various methods to construct objects out of wire and paper mache. You will be amazed as images of your imaginations come to life! Join artist Radha McNamara to creatively construct useful and beautiful things.

FORT BUILDING #1 Ages  8-12

Ever build a fort in the woods? Well, here's your chance to explore and experiment with structures made of natural materials that we will find and gather. We'll learn how to choose a good campsite- guided by "the 5 W's"- since a good shelter in a bad location is a BAD SHELTER. We'll also learn the 4 principles necessary for any effective survival shelter. You will have a chance to work on individual forts and possibly a large group structure with seasoned counselor gumby Montgomery. We will also play games and take walks in the woods, fields, and wetlands to see what we can learn from other creatures’ nests, dens, and hideouts. Bring ideas and enthusiasm!

JAZZ CAMP  Ages 12-18 (Second Week)

Second week of swing band, combo work, and jazz musicianship with independent musician and former EWS instructor Erich Lieth. See Week 2 for details.


WEEK 4 JULY 8-12

FIBER ART FUN Ages 6-9

Enjoy a week exploring the colorful world of fiber arts! Felted crafts, tie-dye, woven friendship bracelets and more! Join artist Radha McNamara for this colorful, creative immersion.

PAINT THE WORLD Ages 8-11

Tap into your unique creativity in this week-long camp focused on drawing, journaling, painting, and self-expression. Whether you're pouring paint on canvas, drawing your spirit animal, journaling about your morning, or creating a Zentangle, you'll have fun during this camp and come away with a deeper appreciation of your unique voice.

ARCHERY CAMP Ages 10-14

In this week of camp enjoy the rare opportunity to hand make a wooden (Hickory) bow, wooden arrows with real turkey feathers and a leather quiver! Learn to shoot your bow using the instinctive archery or traditional archery method. Instructor Peter Yencken has been making bows for over 25 years. He is a guest teacher to many wilderness schools here in the US and Australia.  


WEEK 5 JULY 15-19

CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

MOVEMENT MAGIC Ages 6-9

Explore the world through dance, stories and imaginative play with dance teacher Kiera Manna. Create a rain forest dance where wind, birds and spirits soar. Or an ocean story to dance with whales and mermaids and other wild creatures of the sea. There are sure to be spiraling hoops, floating ribbons, streamers, or fairy ballerinas, and the festive clamor of tambourines!

MOVE YOUR HANDS AND FEET TO THE AFRO-PERUVIAN BEAT Ages 7-10

Explore the vibrant sounds of Latin America with Peruvian musician and teacher Marcos Napa. Join us for a joyful, creative musical adventure where buckets and bodies make great instruments! Through fun group activities, we'll be making music and learning to move to traditional Peruvian and Latin rhythms. Vámonos!

SKATE CAMP!  Ages 8-12

Improve your moves, learn new rad tricks, skate local skate parks in Chapel Hill, Durham, Greensboro and Apex. Learn how to maintain your skateboard and build a ramp. Be inspired by the group and get tips from skateboard veteran and EWS teacher Mr. Trueblood. Liability waiver and additional $25 transportation and park fee required upon enrollment.

LEAF STORIES AND SINGING STONES Ages 8-12

Join gumby Montgomery for a week of animist immersion! We'll wander the lands around EWS, looking for teachers and meeting the many animal, plant, and other creature that live there. We’ll learn to listen deeply through observation, tracking, openness, and IMAGINATION. It's all alive, intelligent, and speaking to us! As Grandfather Stalking Wolf taught, "Every leaf tells a story, every stone sings a song..."


WEEK 6 JULY 22-26


CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6



Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Early Childhood Teacher Kayoko Hasegawa.

FAIRY GARDENS AND GNOME HOMES  Ages 6-9


What fun the fairies and gnomes will have with the homes, playgrounds, and gardens we make for them. Who knows, they may come out of hiding and join in our circle games and songs. Explore the fairy realm and create fun arts and crafts with former EWS Early Childhood assistant Laura Abad.

HONK!   Ages 11-15

Drums, band and string instruments, costumes, and lantern parades are all a part of the worldwide street band movement. Join EWS Music Director Jason Child for an introduction to this energetic, fun style of music.  We will use compose our own music, arrange it to suit our instrumentation, and then create fun ways to perform it. Honk! is suitable for instrumentalists who can read music and play at an intermediate or advanced level. Want to join but feel unsure? Just ask!
