EWS offers specialty camps for Children ages 4-18.  Join us for active, healthy summer days filled with music, drama, fort-building, woodwork, crafts, art, nature exploration, skateboarding, creativity, and imagination on our 54 acres of fields, forests, and farm.

WEEK 1  JUNE 16-20

CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Kindergarten teachers Robin Olson and Ameli Evans.


EARTH WISDOM  Ages 6-8

Join herbalist, earth-lover, and Waldorf teacher, Rebecca Foster, for a week of adventure! Experience the simplicity and richness of how the native people of the Eno River basin and Haw River lived before North Carolina was colonized. We'll explore the forests and meadows of the EWS campus, learn about wild plants and animals, make a basket, and build a wickiup, as we experience the wisdom of an earth-based native way of life.

CASTLES, CROWNS, AND CATAPULTS  Ages 7-10

Do you love to build things? Do you love to build things that launch? Do you love to learn about Kingdoms of long ago? This camp is back by popular demand and will once again be ruled over by EWS Summer Camp veteran and Durham School of the Arts teacher, val h h martinez.
 

ARTISTIC CREATIONS  Ages 8-11

Unlock your inner creativity with Waldorf teacher Robyne Borhanian! We'll spend the week exploring many different artistic expressions. Look forward to painting, felting, tie dyeing, soap-making, weaving, beading, hand-sewing, candle-making, clay work, medicine bags, edible art, and more!

 

WOODWORK CAMP  Ages 9-12
Spend the day with EWS Woodwork teacher Peter Moyers in his Wood Shop developing your skills as an apprentice woodworker. Our acres of woods will reveal that perfect branch for us to make our first works of art. Saws, axes, rasps, and files will be our tools of choice. Carefully creating a small treasure box will be the highlight of the week!

 

WEEK 2  JUNE 23-27

CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Kindergarten teachers Robin Olson and Ameli Evans.

FAIRY TALE THEATER  Ages 6-8

Do you love to dress up? Do you love the stage?  Explore the magic of traditional fairy tales as we read, learn, and act out a variety of marvelous stories at the EWS outdoor Hinoki Theater with EWS alumna Corrie Jolly.


FORT-BUILDING I  Ages 8-11

Have fun in the EWS forest with seasoned naturalist and beloved teacher gumby Montgomery! Learn how to use "the 5 W's" to choose a good location to set up camp, the 4 principles every good shelter needs to have, as well as how to build them!  We'll learn some tried-and-true shelter styles and will have time to use our imaginations to create our own shelters.




ART EXPLORIUM Ages 9-12
Come discover acrylic painting, wire & paper mâché sculpture, and the open studio with EWS Summer Camp veteran and Durham School of the Arts teacher, val h h martinez.  After a few days working on specific projects, have fun in the art studio making your own masterpieces.

SKATE CAMP!  Ages 10-13

Improve your moves, learn new rad tricks, skate local skate parks in Chapel Hill, Durham, and Pittsboro, and learn how to maintain your skateboard. Be inspired by the group and get tips from skateboard veteran Simon Bingham's 20 plus years of skating. Simon is a Waldorf alum and co-founder of No-Comply Skateshop in Austin, Texas. This is for skaters with approximately 1 year of skateboarding experience or more. Liability waiver and additional $25 transportation fee required upon enrollment.

JAZZ CAMP  Ages 13-18 (Two Week Camp)

Swing band, combo work, and jazz musicianship with independent musician and EWS instructor Erich Lieth. Prior musical experience is necessary, and admission is by audition (no prior jazz experience necessary). For more information, see www.summerjazz.org.



WEEK 3 JUNE 30-JULY 4

CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with Waldorf teacher Robyne Borhanian and Kindergarten Assistant Laura Abad.

FAIRY GARDENS AND GNOME HOMES  Ages 6-8
 
What fun the fairies and gnomes will have with the homes, playgrounds, and gardens we make for them. Who knows, they may come out of hiding and join in our circle games and songs. Explore the fairy realm with Waldorf teacher Shannon O'Connor.

FARM CAMP I  Ages 7-10

Join seasoned environmental educator and FarmSchool founder CC King to learn homesteading skills like bread-baking, candle-dipping, and soap-making. We'll be eating our bread with butter we've churned from the cream of a local cow. Perhaps you'd like to share some lemon curd you made from lemons you squeezed and added to eggs you collected from chickens that you know.
 
GAMES GAMES GAMES!  Ages 8-12

There will be a heavy emphasis put on ... Games!  Our time will be shared between outside games that strengthen teamwork, bodies, athleticism, and confidence and inside games that sharpen our minds and wit. Join the fun with EWS Facilities Manager and Theatre teacher, Ian Ostrowski.

JAZZ CAMP  Ages 13-18 (Second Week)
Second week of swing band, combo work, and jazz musicianship with independent musician and EWS instructor Erich Lieth. See Week 2 for details.


WEEK 4 JULY 7-11


CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with Waldorf teacher Rebecca Foster and Handwork Assistant Wendy Ziegler.

TALL TALES AND FOLK SONGS  Ages 6-8

Follow characters from the world's oldest stories into a kingdom of enchantment and music-making. Children will hear folk tales and legends, learn songs and dances, and even try their hand at making simple instruments. Offered by EWS class teacher Benjamin Trueblood.

CALLING ALL CRAFTERS  Ages 7-10

Do you love arts and crafts? If so, this is the summer camp you've been looking for! We'll be having fun with Waldorf teacher Robyne Borhanian for a week of candle-making, shell art, soap-making, nature-weaving, painting, beading, finger-knitting, clay work, wet-felting, and creating flower fairies and edible art.



FORT BUILDING II  Ages  7-10

Ever build a fort in the woods? Well, here's your chance to sharpen those skills. In this camp we will focus on structures made of natural materials with fort-master Jay. Kids will have a chance to work on individual forts as well as a large group structure. We will also go for walks in the woods to look at some of nature’s forts, nests, and dens of woodland creatures. All experience levels encouraged. Bring ideas and enthusiasm!

THE FUNK SHOP DRUMMING CLASS  Ages  8-12

Explore the funky rhythms of the world with conductor and instructor Kyle Duppstadt. We’ll be playing snare drums, bass drums, congas, djembes, cowbells, shakers, and repiques. (No prior drumming experience necessary). We'll also make some percussion instruments of our own and will work in small groups to create original compositions which we’ll record and take home!



WEEK 5 JULY 14-18


CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Nursery Assistant Laura Abad and Handwork Assistant Wendy Ziegler.

ARTS PARTY  Ages 6-8                                                                                         
Each day we will explore an array of visual art experiences. Come ready to paint with finger paint, temperas, and water colors; draw with pastels, colored chalk, and other media; learn to embroider on burlap, weave in circles, sew your own stuffed animal, or decorate fabric with glue batiks; make prints, rubbings, collages, and so much more! We'll also begin and end each day with group games, singing, and storytelling.  Storyteller and artist Louise Omoto Kessel is the Camp Director at Clapping Hands Farm and enjoys sharing art and building community in a camp setting. Teli and Aya Shabu and Louise plan to work together for part of each day, so all the theme campers will have opportunities to drum with Teli, dance with Aya, and make art with Louise!

FREE YOUR FEET WITH AN AFRICAN BEAT!  Ages 7-10
Groove in new ways to Africa's diverse music.  Bodies will become the polyrhythmic beat.  Wrapped in the customs and values of the continent, shared by Aya Shabu, we will create our own movement songs.  Group, duet, and solo dances will break out as part of our joyful celebration.  Teli and Aya Shabu and Louise plan to work together for part of each day, so all the theme campers will have opportunities to drum with Teli, dance with Aya, and make are with Louise!

IGNITE YOUR RHYTHM!  Ages 9-13
Is rhythm the soundtrack of your life? It is in Africa. We begin making LOTS of noise on stick, hand, and talking drums. Everyone will quickly realize that we all have rhythm as we explore visual patterns, bodily kinesthetic rhythm, and structured music. Come jam with Teli Shabu! Teli and Aya Shabu and Louise plan to work together for part of each day, so all the theme campers will have opportunities to drum with Teli, dance with Aya, and make art with Louise!

 

WEEK 6 JULY 21-25


CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

VAMOS A SUDAMÉRICA!  Ages 7-9

This week travel through your imaginations to South America with "Señora" Kim D'Angelo, EWS's own Spanish teacher. We'll explore a new  country of South America each day through stories, songs, games, crafts, and tasty treats from that region. No knowledge of Spanish is necessary, although much of the day will find campers immersed in the language.  Grab your pasaportes (will be provided!) and imaginación (must be packed!) y....vamos a Sudamérica!


TOYS AND GAMES  Ages 8-13

Join storyteller,  toy maker, juggler, and games enthusiast Louise Omoto Kessel for a joyous week of romping and running while learning creative cooperative games, some big group challenge games (rainbow tag! six feathers! capture the flag!), along with some traditional favorites. Then we'll cool off in the Toy Making workshop where stomp rockets, hula hoops, string tricks, kaleidoscopes, tops, trouble dolls, parachutes, and more are on the list of possibilities. We'll round out our fun with Louise's unusual collection of board games, card games, puzzles, mind benders, and skill toys. Louise is the Camp Director at Clapping Hands Farm and a big believer in summer camp magic!
