EWS offers specialty camps for Children ages 4-18. Join us for active, healthy summer days filled with music, drama, fort-building, woodwork, crafts, art, nature exploration, creativity, and imagination on our 54 acres of fields, forests, and farm.

CHILDHOOD MAGIC Ages 4-6 FULL
Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Kindergarten Teachers Robin Olson and Ameli Evans.
FIBER ART FUN Ages 6-8

Explore the world of Fiber Arts! We will weave, felt, dye, batik, and create woven art with beloved Kindergarten Assistant and fiber artist Radha McNamara.
ART EXPLORIUM Ages 9-12
Learn about the masters such as Giacometti’s elongated figures and O’Keefe’s large flower paintings. Then create your own fun “masterpieces” like paper maché figures and large leaf drawings. Dress for success and a mess with EWS Summer Camp veteran and Durham School of the Arts teacher, val h h martinez.
THE FUNK SHOP DRUMMING CLASS Ages 8-12
Explore the funky rhythms of the world with conductor and instructor Kyle Duppstadt. We’ll be playing snare drums, bass drums, congas, djembes, cowbells, shakers, and repiques. (No prior drumming experience necessary). We'll also make some percussion instruments of our own, working in small groups to create original compositions and recording our music to take home!

MAKE IT BIG, get small Ages 7-10
Drawing, painting, and sculpture will be used to explore the size of things. Take a bug and MAKE IT BIG, then take a building and shrink it down. EWS Summer Camp veteran and Durham School of the Arts teacher, val h h martinez, will take you on this ever-expanding and shrinking adventure.
¡VAMOS A CENTROAMÉRICA! Ages 7-9
Take a cultural journey through Central America with EWS Spanish teacher Maria Jose Fitzgerald. Your adventure will include the colorful arts, lively music, delicious food, exciting stories, and typical games of the varied Central American countries ... and of course lots of Spanish speaking! Vamonos!
WOODWORK CAMP Ages 9-12 FULL
Spend the day with EWS Woodwork teacher Peter Moyers in his Wood Shop developing your skills as an apprentice woodworker. Our acres of woods will reveal that perfect branch for us to make our first works of art. Saws, axes, rasps, and files will be our tools of choice. Carefully creating a small treasure box will be the highlight of the week!
JAZZ CAMP Ages 13-18 (Two Week Camp)
Swing band, combo work, and jazz musicianship with independent musician and EWS instructor Erich Lieth. Prior musical experience is necessary, and admission is by audition (no prior jazz experience necessary). For more information, see www.summerjazz.org.

FAIRY TALE THEATER Ages 6-9
Do you love to dress up? Do you love the stage? Explore the magic of traditional fairy tales as we read, learn, and act out a variety of marvelous stories at the EWS outdoor Hinoki Theater with EWS alumna Corrie Jolly.
EARTH ELDERS Ages 8-12
Join seasoned environmental educator Cecelia Carver (CC) for a week of finding the teachers in the natural world. Wasp may teach us pottery, Spider may teach us patience, faith, or how to weave a basket, Fox may teach us how to walk softly, or we may learn how to see like Owl, listen like Deer, touch like Raccoon, and sniff like Bear.
ARTISTIC CREATIONS Ages 9-12
Unlock your inner creativity! We'll spend the week exploring many different artistic expressions. Look forward to painting, felting, tie dyeing, soap-making, weaving, beading, hand-sewing, candle-making, clay work, medicine bags, edible art, and more!

There will be a heavy emphasis put on ... Games! Our time will be shared between outside games to strengthen teamwork, bodies, athleticism, and confidence and inside games to sharpen our minds and wit. Join the fun with EWS’s Facilities Manager and Theatre teacher, Ian Ostrowski.
CALLING ALL CRAFTERS Ages 6-9

Do you love arts and crafts? If so, this is the summer camp you've been looking for! We'll be having fun with Waldorf teacher Robyne Borhanian for a week of candle-making, shell art, soap-making, nature-weaving, painting, beading, finger-knitting, clay work, wet-felting, and creating flower fairies and edible art.
CREATIVE JOURNEYS CAMP Ages 9+
Jaime Powell guides campers in a beautiful and fun-filled journey of self discovery through
playful use of movement, language, and other forms of creative self expression. Dance, yoga, creative writing, and circus arts, along with community-building games will leave lasting positive impressions.

FORT-BUILDING Ages 7-10 FULL
Have fun in the EWS forest with seasoned environmental educator Cecelia Carver (CC)! Learn how to use "the 5 W's" to choose a good location to set up camp, the 4 principles every good shelter needs to have, as well as how to build them! We'll learn some tried-and-true shelter styles and will have time to use our imaginations to create our own shelters.
ANCIENT CULTURE OF INDIA Ages 7-9
Come spend a week exploring the traditions and arts of India. We will learn traditional dance, adorn ourselves with henna and face-paint, make jewelry, sing Sanskrit songs, hear and act out stories from the ancient epics, and make clay lamps to house our personal genie! Priya Gopal – teacher, choreographer, and director of Prema Natya Dance School – will take us on a special journey to that land of beauty, magic, mystery, and adventure!
NATURAL DYEING, FELTING, AND WEAVING Ages 9-12
Learn to dye sheep's wool with plants. Transform the dyed wool into wet and needle-felted creations. Learn to weave the colorful wool on homemade looms with Waldorf teacher and felt artist Robyne Borhanian.
SNACK ATTACK! COOKING CAMP Ages 10-13
Are you an aspiring baker? Do you love to cook? Learn how to make classic snack foods at home with healthier ingredients. Measure, roll, pat, pour, stir, mix, and attack a snack every day! Gourmet chef Mary Moss will be sharing her expertise in the kitchen! Additional $35 ingredients fee.

ADSHUSHEER! Ages 7-9
Join our tribe! We'll travel back in time to Adshusheer, the ancient village that existed on this land before it became Chapel Hill. We’ll play tracking and skills games, learn about the native peoples that inhabited this land before us, and will have a chance to practice some of the skills that kept them alive. We'll explore their culture through stories, songs, and nature activities with EWS grades teacher Benjamin Trueblood and naturalist Kiah Wells.
THE BIG BEAT DRUMMING CAMP Ages 8-12
We'll learn the basics of playing with our hands (congas, djembes, cajon) and with sticks (snare drum, repique, bass drums, the drum set) and several contemporary rhythms like hip-hop, drum & bass, mangue-beat, and many other hip grooves. We'll also create our own instruments, make a parade, and record our music to take home! Come join the rhythm with percussionist and instructor Kyle Duppstadt.
