Summer Programs

EWS offers specialty camps for Children ages 4-18.  Join us for active, healthy summer days filled with music, drama, fort-building, woodwork, crafts, art, nature exploration, skateboarding, creativity, and imagination on our 54 acres of fields, forests, and farm.

FORT BUILDING  Ages 6-9

  CAMP IS FULL

Have fun in the forest creating tipis, huts, and forts of all sizes with EWS teacher Mr. Ben Trueblood. Let your imagination dwell in group-made debris huts or magical miniature homes created for fairies and gnomes.



CIRCUS ARTS AND GAMES  Ages 8-11


Welcome to the magical world of circus! We will learn the basics of circus arts – balance, juggling, tumbling – in a safe and nurturing atmosphere with Waldorf movement teacher Ted Hall. No equipment or experience necessary!
 
WOODWORK CAMP  Ages 10-13

Spend the day with EWS Woodwork teacher Peter Moyers in his Wood Shop developing your skills as an apprentice woodworker. Our acres of woods will reveal that perfect branch for us to make our first works of art. Saws, axes, rasps, and files will be our tools of choice. Carefully creating a treasure box will be the highlight of the week! Additional $15 material fee.

 

WEEK 2  JUNE 29-JULY 3

GUTE REISE! A JOURNEY TO EUROPE  Ages 6-9


This week, travel through your imaginations to Europe with "Frau" Katja Moos, German teacher at EWS. We'll explore different countries of Europe each day through stories, songs, games, crafts, and tasty treats from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe. No knowledge of European languages is necessary, but your campers might sing a song in German, French, or perhaps Norwegian, Italian, or another language on the way home in the car! Get ready to wave colorful flags and explore Europe – Gute Reise!


SKATE CAMP!  Ages 7-13

Improve your moves, learn new rad tricks, skate local skate parks in Chapel Hill, Durham, and Graham. Learn how to maintain your skateboard and build a ramp. Be inspired by the group and get tips from skateboard veterans and Waldorf alums Simon Bingham and our own Mr. Trueblood. Liability waiver and additional $25 transportation and park fee required upon enrollment.



MAGICAL WORLD OF PLANTS  Ages 9-13

LAVENDER, ROSEMARY, PEPPERMINT, PINE, CHAMOMILE – Join Eli Pinto - Mother, Earth Lover, Tree Admirer, Clinical Aromatherapist - in exploring the exciting world of plants. Learn to identify Nature all around you through smells, plant contemplation, fun facts, and games. Who can spot the Mother Tree? Each day we will make an herbal product like aromatherapy sprays, lip-balm, refreshing gels, Lavender Lemonade, sachets, and much more!



 

JAZZ CAMP  Ages 13-18

(Two Week Camp)

Swing band, combo work, and jazz musicianship with independent musician and EWS instructor Erich Lieth. Prior musical experience is necessary, and admission is by audition (no prior jazz experience necessary). For more information, see www.summerjazz.org.

CAMP CAMELOT  Ages 6-8
 


Hear Ye! Hear Ye!  King Arthur is looking for a few new squires to join the ranks of Knighthood and sit round his table!  Bold young adventurers who favor those days of yore will learn about being a knight, train for a mini-tournament, sing some songs, and generally have camp-fun.  All squires will make a play-shield and play-sword to take home, some might learn the basics of chess. Mr. Wiley will be leading this week of enjoyable adventure in the lands of Camelot through imagination and play. Huzzah!  Huzzah!  Huzzah!




FORT BUILDING II  Ages  8-12

Ever build a fort in the woods? Well, here's your chance to explore and experiment with structures made of natural materials that we will find and gather. You will have a chance to work on individual forts as well as a large group structure with builder and EWS dad Francisco Plaza. We will also take walks in the woods, fields, and wetlands to see what we can learn from other creatures’ nests, dens, and hideouts. Bring ideas and enthusiasm!



DANCE CAMP  Ages 8-12



Join dancer, teacher, and choreographer Jessi Knight for a week of dance exploration and creation. Using our minds, bodies, and spirits, we will experience the magic that is the dancing body. We will get to know the world of dance through basic technique and vocabulary, improvisation, jamming, playing, and creating together. No previous dance training required. This camp is open to all levels of experience!


JAZZ CAMP  Ages 13-18 (Second Week)

EARTH WISDOM  Ages 6-8



Join herbalist, earth-lover, and Waldorf teacher, Rebecca Foster, for a week of adventure! Experience the simplicity and richness of how the native people of the Eno River basin and Haw River lived before North Carolina was colonized. We'll explore the forests and meadows of the EWS campus, learn about wild plants and animals, make a basket, and build a wickiup, as we experience the wisdom of an earth-based native way of life.



CALLING ALL CRAFTERS  Ages 8-11


Do you love arts and crafts? If so, this is the summer camp you've been looking for! We'll be having fun with Waldorf teacher Robyne Borhanian for a week of candle-making, shell art, soap-making, nature-weaving, painting, finger-knitting, clay work, wet-felting, and more.


SPORTS AND GAMES  Ages  9-13

All over the world games are being played! Come learn and play games from many corners of the earth and challenge yourselves with sport training. You will learn to play together and against each other in a supportive and nurturing environment with Waldorf movement teacher Ted Hall.  Activities will be tailored to the interests of campers and may include soccer and futsal, baseball/softball, basketball, flag football, ultimate frisbee, volleyball, badminton and/or golf, plus lots of fun games!

 

WEEK 5 JULY 20-25


CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6



Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Early Childhood teacher Kyle Dunlap.

FAIRY GARDENS AND GNOME HOMES  Ages 6-8


What fun the fairies and gnomes will have with the homes, playgrounds, and gardens we make for them. Who knows, they may come out of hiding and join in our circle games and songs. Explore the fairy realm and create fun arts and crafts with EWS Early Childhood assistant Laura Abad.


FARM CAMP Ages 7-10



Join seasoned environmental educator and FarmSchool founder CC King to learn homesteading skills like bread-baking, candle-dipping, and soap-making. We'll be eating our bread with butter we've churned from the cream of a local cow. Perhaps you'd like to share some lemon curd you made from lemons you squeezed and added to eggs you collected from chickens that you know.



ARTISTIC CREATIONS  Ages 9-12

Unlock your inner creativity with Waldorf teacher Robyne Borhanian! We'll spend the week exploring many different artistic expressions. Look forward to painting, felting, tie-dyeing, soap-making, weaving, beading, hand-sewing, candle-making, working with clay, making medicine bags, and more!



HONK!   Ages 11-15

Drums, band and string instruments, costumes, and lantern parades are all a part of the worldwide street band movement. Join EWS Music Director Jason Child for an introduction to this energetic, fun style of music.  We will use borrowed arrangements and put together our own arrangements to suit our instrumentation and then find ways to perform this music the way it's meant to be done: live and outdoors. Honk! is suitable for instrumentalists who can read music and play at an intermediate or advanced level. Want to join but feel unsure? Just ask!

 

WEEK 6 JULY 27-31

ARTS AND CRAFTS AND EDIBLE TREATS  Ages 6-8

We’ll make toys and friendship bracelets, paint, mold clay, and do lots of other fun activities. Our campers will stir batter, blend berry smoothies, and hand-crank the ice cream maker with EWS Early Childhood assistant Laura Abad. And don’t worry, we’ll use healthy ingredients and make savory treats too!


AFRICAN VILLAGE  Ages 8-11

Travel with Brother Teli Shabu to an African village where stories, music, and games are all connected by rhythm. Everyone can craft: stamping, painting, instrument making; creativity sprouts like seeds. Bring your eyes, bring your ears, bring your hands, bring your feet. You will need all of these because in Africa, life is rhythm and rhythm is life.


BEADS GALORE!  Ages  9-13

Beads have been around for centuries, and humans have made and worn beaded jewelry for nearly as long.  Join Sidra Grove of The Bead Store in Carrboro to learn the basics of various styles of beadwork for making necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and key-rings.  We will work with bead wire, waxed linen, leather, and even a needle and thread as stringing materials to make gorgeous sparkling creations with glass, wood, and crystal beads.
