Summer Programs

EWS offers specialty camps for Children ages 4-18.  Join us for active, healthy summer days filled with music, drama, fort-building, woodwork, crafts, art, nature exploration, skateboarding, creativity, and imagination on our 54 acres of fields, forests, and farm.

WEEK 1  JUNE 19-23

CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6



Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Early Childhood teacher Robin Olson.


FAIRY GARDENS AND GNOME HOMES  Ages 6-8

What fun the fairies and gnomes will have with the homes, playgrounds, and gardens we make for them. Who knows, they may come out of hiding and join in our circle games and songs. Explore the fairy realm and create fun arts and crafts with EWS Early Childhood assistant Laura Abad.


GUTE REISE! A JOURNEY TO EUROPE Ages 7-10

This week, travel through your imaginations to Europe with German native and EWS teacher "Frau" Katja Moos. We'll explore several European countries through stories, songs, games, crafts, and tasty regional treats. Some of the countries are favorites from last summer, ready for a return visit. Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe – fasten your seat belt for a fun take-off! No prior knowledge of European languages is necessary, but your campers might sing a song in German, French, or another language on the way home in the car! Get ready to wave colorful flags and explore Europe – Gute Reise!


MAGICAL WORLD OF PLANTS  Ages 8-11

Spend a week with herbalist Rebecca Foster, diving into the magic of herbs! Learn how to identify, harvest and make medicine from plants that grow in your own backyard! In this camp we will learn how to make herbal salves, tinctures, poultices, and delicious herbal treats. We will also sing, draw, and celebrate our green allies!

 


WEEK 2  JUNE 26-30

CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Early Childhood teacher Robin Olson.


MUSICAL STORYTIME FOR THE STAGE  Ages 6-8

Discover and explore stories and traditions from around the world.  Children will hear folk tales and legends, learn songs and dances, and bring stories to the magic of the stage at the EWS outdoor Hinoki Theater.  Offered by musician and EWS friend David Hamilton.

FORT BUILDING  Ages  8-11 FULL

Ever build a fort in the woods? Well, here's your chance to explore and experiment with structures made of natural materials that we will find and gather. We'll learn how to choose a good campsite – guided by "the 5 W's" – since a good shelter in a bad location is a BAD SHELTER. We'll also learn the 4 principles necessary for any effective survival shelter. You will have a chance to work on individual forts and possibly a large group structure with seasoned counselor gumby Montgomery. We will also play games and take walks in the woods, fields, and wetlands to see what we can learn from other creatures’ nests, dens, and hideouts. Bring ideas and enthusiasm!



ANIMATION CREATION  Ages 10-13

Step into the kingdom of stop motion animation. You will learn how to transform any object into animation characters, full of life and personality. You will create the story, build the set and characters, and then film and edit your masterpiece. No previous experience required. Just bring your imagination and your enthusiasm to this hands-on adventure. With Mrs Liudmila Self, a veteran filmmaker and a Waldorf class teacher.


JAZZ CAMP  Ages 13-18

(Two Week Camp)Swing band, combo work, and jazz musicianship with independent musician and EWS instructor Erich Lieth. Prior musical experience is necessary, and admission is by audition (no prior jazz experience necessary). For more information, see www.summerjazz.org.


WEEK 3 JULY 3-7

CHILDHOOD MAGIC  Ages 4-6

Arts, crafts, nature walks, indoor and outdoor play, dress-up, water play, storytelling, and puppet shows in our beautiful Kindergarten with EWS Early Childhood teacher Kyle Dunlap.


FLOW   Ages 6-9

Delve into the elements as we explore flowing water and air with EWS Music teacher Jason Child. We’ll spend our days outdoors making small waterways, dams, boats, pinwheels, streamers, kites, small hot air balloons, and more.  Bring your curiosity, ingenuity, and a change of clothes because we may get wet!

FARM CAMP Ages 7-10

Join seasoned environmental educator and FarmSchool founder CC King to learn homesteading skills like bread-baking, candle-dipping, and soap-making. We'll be eating our bread with butter we've churned from the cream of a local cow. Perhaps you'd like to share some lemon curd you made from lemons you squeezed and added to eggs you collected from chickens that you know!

THEATER OF THE FOREST  Ages 10-13

We will create original stories, songs, and characters that tell the tales of the trees and wonder where the river runs.  Perfect for creative kids with an interest in theater and the great outdoors. With instructor Creighton Irons, a NYC-based composer/lyricist and teaching artist born and raised on the New Hope River.


SKATE CAMP!  Ages 9-13

Improve your moves, learn new rad tricks, skate local skate parks in Chapel Hill, Durham, and Graham. Learn how to maintain your skateboard and build a ramp. Be inspired by the group and get tips from skateboard veteran and EWS teacher Mr. Trueblood. Liability waiver and additional $25 transportation and park fee required upon enrollment.




JAZZ CAMP  Ages 13-18 (Second Week)

Second week of swing band, combo work, and jazz musicianship with independent musician and EWS instructor Erich Lieth. See Week 2 for details.

FAIRYTALE THEATER    Ages 6-8

Do you love stories? Do you love to dress up and be on stage?  Explore the magic of traditional fairy tales as we read, learn, and act out a variety of marvelous stories at the EWS outdoor Hinoki Theater with EWS teacher Shannon O'Connor.

NATURE'S WAY  Ages  8-11

Through games, hikes, crafts and studies, we learn nature's ways as we follow our curiosity into the natural world. With a backpack of surprises, and decades of experience leading learners into the woods, gumby Montgomery loves to explore with curious nature-lovers of all ages. We'll make field journals, get oriented with our compasses and field guides, and then head out to sketch, make fires, play games, and see where the adventure takes us.


FIBER ARTS FUN  Ages 10-13

Using a rainbow selection of plant-dyed wool, we will explore the ancient art of felting: wet-felting and needle-felting wool pictures, fairy felt, flowers, geodes, and unique creations. And, as always, we will play games and enjoy time outside in our wooded playground with EWS teacher Robyne Borhanian. Additional $15 supplies fee.


HONK!   Ages 11-15

Drums, band and string instruments, costumes, and lantern parades are all a part of the worldwide street band movement. Join EWS Music Director Jason Child for an introduction to this energetic, fun style of music.  We will use borrowed arrangements and put together our own arrangements to suit our instrumentation and then find ways to perform this music the way it's meant to be done: live and outdoors. Honk! is suitable for instrumentalists who can read music and play at an intermediate or advanced level. Want to join but feel unsure? Just ask!


WEEK 5 JULY 17-21

CALLING ALL CRAFTERS  Ages 8-11

Do you love arts and crafts? If so, this is the summer camp you've been looking for! We'll be having fun with Waldorf teacher Robyne Borhanian for a week of candle-making, shell art, soap-making, nature-weaving, painting, finger-knitting, clay work, wet-felting, and more.

EARTH WISDOM  Ages 6-9 FULL

Join herbalist, earth-lover, and Waldorf teacher, Rebecca Foster, for a week of adventure! Experience the simplicity and richness of how the native people of the Eno River basin and Haw River lived before North Carolina was colonized. We'll explore the forests and meadows of the EWS campus, learn about wild plants and animals, make a basket, and build a wickiup, as we experience the wisdom of an earth-based native way of life.



THE HEART OF JAPAN  Ages 8-11

Together we will experience the beauty of Japanese culture through: Tea ceremony, traditional flower arrangement, calligraphy with brush, sushi-making, songs, and play. We will touch the deep heart of Japanese tradition and even explore the importance of courtesy and manners, in a fun way! EWS faculty member Kayoko Hasegawa is a  Certified Language/Literature teacher in Japan, Certified master of Tea ceremony (Ura-senke), flower arrangement (Ikenobo), and traditional cooking (Kinsa-style). Additional $15 supplies fee.


WOODWORK CAMP  Ages 10-13

Learn about rules and tools for working with wood as we make two useful items in the woodshop at Emerson. The first from a cedar tree that we will cut down: a candle holder. The second will be made with prepared western cedar: a bird house. Additional $25 supplies fee.
