Tuition & Financial Aid

Tuition at the Emerson Waldorf School, like the curriculum itself, takes a holistic approach, balancing all aspects (social, financial, etc.), and works to meet each family where they are.

We feel strongly that a Waldorf education should be available to any child, regardless of financial circumstance, and we balance this belief with the practical realities of our school’s financial requirements.  While we offer a tremendous amount of tuition assistance, we  also cap tuition adjustment at 50% of tuition.

Financial Aid and Tuition Adjustment

The Emerson Waldorf School refers to Financial Aid support as Tuition Adjustment or TA.  We use TADS, a financial assessment organization, to provide a framework through which household need can be measured fairly and equitably.  Recommendations from TADS will be sent to the Tuition Adjustment committee at the school, and we will use this information along with your narrative responses toward tuition adjustment this school year.

Tuition support is available on the basis of demonstrated need.  If you believe that your resources are not sufficient to meet the total cost of an Emerson Waldorf School education, you may apply.

Recommendations from TADS are used by the Tuition Adjustment Committee at the school, in accordance with its policies, to determine the award amount.  Final awards notices will be mailed by the committee.

Financial Applications for tuition adjustment may be completed online starting in January of the school year you are applying. We offer tuition adjustment for students applying for Kindergarten to High School; tuition adjustment is not available for Morning Garden Parent/Child, Nursery, or Summer Camp.

The Emerson Waldorf School accepts North Carolina Opportunity Scholarships and also offers Diversity Scholarships to income-qualifying families.

PAYMENT OF TUITION:  Families may opt to pay tuition through one, two, ten, or twelve (June through May) payments.  All families are required to complete their Tuition Management Agreement through TADS before their child can attend school.

MONTHLY PAYMENTS:  Monthly payments are due on the 15th of each month beginning in the June before the school year starts.   Returning families enrolling after June 15th must remit all missed payments due by time of enrollment. Tuition for new families enrolling after June 15th may be scheduled to start at their enrollment date and may result in less than 12 payments.  The final monthly payment for the year must be paid by May 15th.

TUITION ADJUSTMENT:  The School will consider Tuition Adjustment (TA) for families who demonstrate financial need; this discount applies to tuition only.  It may not be possible, however, to accommodate every family’s unique circumstance.  Therefore, the School asks parents/guardians to pursue all other sources of income for tuition payments.  Your financial aid process must be finalized, and the Tuition Management Agreement completed on TADS, before your child can attend school. Tuition adjustment is available for students applying for Kindergarten to High School; we are unable to provide tuition adjustment for Morning Garden Parent/Child students, Nursery students, or Summer Camp students.

TUITION DEPOSIT: For new students and returning First Grade, Kindergarten and Nursery students, a tuition deposit of $500 per child is required in order to reserve your spot.  The tuition deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable.  The deposit will be applied fully towards the year’s tuition.

SIBLING DISCOUNT:  A discount of 10% is applied against the tuition for the younger siblings, enrolled in Grades 1-12, of children enrolled in Grade 1 or higher.  The sibling discount does not apply to students enrolled in the Nursery or Kindergarten programs, or those receiving TA.

LATE FEES:  Accounts for which a payment is received five business days past the due date are assessed a $29 late fee by TADS. When a payment is thirty days past due, a finance charge, equal to 5% of the total invoice, will be added.  Parents/guardians having difficulty paying tuition or other fees should contact the Finance Director to make alternate arrangements.  Also see EWS Arrears Policy.

NEW STUDENT ENROLLMENT FEE:  All families are required to pay a one-time, non-refundable $1,300 New Student Enrollment Fee for each new student enrolled. We encourage families to pay this Fee in full at the time of enrollment.  New students enrolling in the Early Childhood program have the option to make a smaller deposit towards the total ($200 for Nursery, $300 for Kindergarten) rather than pay the entire fee immediately.  For complete details, families of new students should refer to the Facilities Maintenance Fee Description and Agreement found  here.

PARENT ORGANIZATION DUES:  An annual fee of $70 for Parent Organization (P.O.) dues will be included in each family’s Tuition Agreement and will be payable on the first tuition invoice.

RETURNED CHECK FEE:  There is a $35 charge for all checks made directly to EWS that are returned. This fee is subject to change without notice. For checks or payments made directly to TADS, please see their policy on returned payments.

OTHER FEES:  In addition to tuition, Facilities Maintenance Fees and P.O. dues, there are a number of additional fees for which a family may be responsible. These include the Early Childhood After Care and Extended Care Programs and Grades After School programs, sports, field trips, books, music lessons, etc. These fees are part of your account balance and therefore subject to the Arrears Policy as well.

Families are responsible for the replacement cost of any supplies, materials, facilities, or equipment that the student breaks, damages, or wastes.

PROOF OF PAYMENT:  Parents are liable for proof of payment.  Acceptable forms of proof include canceled checks, money order traces from the issuing agency, credit card statements, and School receipts (issued upon request for cash only).  In matters of dispute, lack of proof of payment will be construed as non-payment.

RE-ENROLLING FAMILIES:  Re-enrollment for students in Nursery and Kindergarten will start on January 18th and will close on February 12th. Re-enrollment for students in grades 1 through 12 will start on March 8th and close on April 4th. Students may re-enroll for the following year as long as they are in good standing with the school. If a family has a past due balance, re-enrollment will not occur until the account is current.  If a family does not meet the TADS contract agreement set-up deadline of May 29, a $250 late processing fee will be due.

WITHDRAWAL OF AN ENROLLED STUDENT:  Intention to withdraw a child from the Emerson Waldorf School must be made in writing to the Administrator or Registrar and must state the reasons and anticipated actual date of withdrawal. The withdrawal will be effective as of the date of receipt of the letter or the last day of attendance, whichever is later.

In the event a student is withdrawn or dismissed from the school, the financial liabiity under this contract will be determined as follows:

After June 1st, one quarter (1/4) of the annual tuition is due.
After September 1st, one half (1/2) of the annual tuition is due.
After December 1st, the full annual tuition is due.

ARREARS:  No transcripts, year-end reports, scholastic records, diplomas, or letters of academic reference will be issued until all bills are paid in full.  A student will not be permitted to enter or continue in school if his or her tuition and fees are in arrears more than sixty (60) days.  A student will not be permitted to re-enroll until his or her account is current. Families are required to pay attorneys’ or other fees incurred by the School in the collection of amounts due. Please also refer to the EWS Arrears Policy.

NON-DISCRIMINATION STATEMENT:  The Emerson Waldorf School does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, gender, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin in the administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, tuition adjustment program, athletic, or other school-administered programs.
